Breakfasting on whatever you feel is going to set you up for the day is important to everyone - especially when you are as busy as Hilary Duff.

With a full-on schedule consisting of acting, singing, writing children's books, working out - and bringing up her three children - Hillary is intentional about the breakfasts she consumes to start her days and she's shared the deets in a recent interview.

'I wake up really hungry,' she revealed - before adding, 'I'm obsessed with those cauliflower rounds - they're so good!'

Cauliflower, er, what now?

'Made of cauliflower and it looks like a pitta [bread] but its small and they're just cauliflower and maybe like one other thing. They're super clean and I put it in the air fryer and put egg salad on top of it; i'll put, like, avocado, a fried egg and a vegan sausage..'

These pitta bread-shaped rounds only have four main ingredients and act as the bread substitute on her morning plate - as a lower-carb, higher-protein alternative to bread.

Hillary then went on list her other favourite morning 'meals'.

'I do overnight oats; I know Gwyneth's in trouble for saying this but sometimes I try to just drink coffee in the morning and like, starve off my hunger,' she continues, wrinkling her nose.

'We all do it,' affirmed one of the Lipstick On The Rim podcast hosts - 'she just says it'.

Why Hillary's breakfast choices have caused controversy

Unsurprisingly, Hillary's admission that she tries to avoid eating in the morning drew negative comments from TikTok-ers.

'Starve off the hunger??? Jesus' wrote one.

'I can't believe we're in 2023 and still not understanding that eating real, unprocessed food most of the time is your best bet,' wrote another - adding, 'like, I'm so tired'.

Another commenter made a great point about how a 'breakfast' of coffee really wasn't a good shout.

'Starving off your hunger with coffee? Acidic stuff in an empty stomach, just a great idea 😅'

'I hate when people describe food as "clean",' added another. 'Food is food.'

From where we are sitting, those are a lot of good points, well made.

So, are any of Hillary's breakfast habits healthy?

Let's break it down.

Firstly: trying not to eat by drinking coffee all morning is a *terrible* shout (it could induce queasiness, increase anxiety levels and play havoc with your all-important gut health).

Secondly: no, not 'everyone' tries to avoid eating. (Sigh.)

Thirdly: Pitta bread - like every other type of bread - can absolutely have a regular role in a healthy, balanced diet. In fact, eating enough slow-release carbohydrates is essential for everything from energy levels and mental health to exercise performance.

But, you should opt for wholegrain versions when you can.

When you eat a piece of wholegrain bread or a forkful of wholegrain pasta, saliva surrounds the complex carb molecule and begins breaking it down into maltose.

Then, an enzyme in your intestine called amylase has to break it down further into smaller glucose molecules - at which point they can enter your bloodstream.

This longer process causes a slower rise in your insulin levels, avoiding any sudden peaks.

All that said - there is nothing wrong with eating these cauliflower rounds topped with sources of protein and fat, if that's what you fancy.

Cauliflower has significant amounts of nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin B6 - and provides you with many necessary antioxidants and fibre. It's also low in calories.

You can't buy cauliflower thins in the UK. But if want to have a play in the kitchen by making your own cauliflower thins (think of them like a healthy version of the hash brown - delicious) we've found a recipe below.
