We know what you're thinking: is there such a thing as a best unitard? If you don't already have one hanging your wardrobe – or screwed up, sweaty, in your wash basket – don't worry, you're not behind the times just yet. But we're here to convince you to invest asap, obviously.
The thing is, after a few years spent wearing nothing but joggers, hoodies and sports kit, we're ready to expand our sportswear horizons. Gym leggings are great and all that, but what happens when you want to swag out on your park run? It's pretty difficult to showcase personality in activewear when the only options are a few bold stripes or a snazzy print.
What is a unitard?
Enter the hot new gym kit that's all over our Instagram feeds right now: the unitard. A full-look rolled into one that makes for excellent layering – you can let one underpin shorts, baggy T-shirts and windbreakers, or wear it solo with a bumbag and a cap.
Hardcore gym-goers, before you roll your eyes at this "fashun" frivolity, let us list the benefits of wearing a one-piece. These babies provide excellent coverage during runs and high impact activity; smoothing your silhouette and preventing things from slipping, sagging and rolling down. They're incredibly flexible, moulding to your body to provide a second skin while you're doing yoga or Pilates. And, as we mentioned above, they're brilliant for layering; a unitard can provide a perfect base for those in-betweeny spring days when you need to strip off halfway through your jog.
Which unitard is best?
If you were wondering which one piece to choose, don't just go by aesthetics (although we wouldn't blame you for instantly adding Desigual's floral print number to your basket). Longline, cotton-jersey styles are best for LISS activities and look great styled with an oversized sweater while you're WFH. Live the Process and Ernest Leoty's are the prettiest and come in a rainbow of colours, but there are cheaper alternatives to be found on ASOS.
Sportier, spandex iterations from Nike will see you through sweaty HITT workouts, but any short, scoop-back styles will work for cyclers and hot summer sessions. Is sustainability your main concern? The delightfully stretchy jumpsuits at Girlfriend Collective are all made from recycled fibres.
