First-timers may be surprised by all of the after care a tattoo requires—both in the immediate and the long-term. And one thing you'll have to be particularly mindful of for years to come? Protecting your ink from the sun's harmful rays. (Of course, you should always take special care to shield your skin with a quality sunscreen!)

Meet Our Experts: Aanand Geria, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Geria Dermatology in Rutherford, NJ, Mona Gohara, MD, board-certified dermatologist and associate clinical professor at Yale Department of Dermatology, Debra Jaliman, MD, board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City

"For new tattoos, wearing sunscreen is crucial during the healing process," says Aanand Geria, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New Jersey. "Sunburn can cause fading, peeling, and blistering of tattoos, significantly affecting their appearance." What's more, exposure to UV rays can cause tattoos to fade prematurely, especially in areas that receive direct sunlight, he explains.

The best sunscreens for tattoos provide broad-spectrum protection against UVB and UVA rays and have an SPF 30 or higher, says Dr. Geria. "Choose a water-resistant sunscreen that can withstand sweat and does not contain ingredients that can potentially harm the tattoo, such as alcohol or fragrance," he adds.

To help you find the best options on the market, our editors formulated a list of dermatologist's top picks, plus bestsellers with overwhelmingly positive reviews across top retailers.

CeraVe Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Pros
  • Inexpensive
  • Lightweight and non-greasy
Cons
  • Leaves a subtle white cast behind

The main reason dermatologists are more apt to recommend standard sunscreens over sunscreens specifically-formulated for tattoos is price. And this drugstore pick is proof you don't need to fall for the markup. The mineral sunscreen is readily available at a fair price, yet is lightweight, non-greasy, fast-absorbing, and offers SPF 30 protection. Check, check, check, and check again.

Pros
  • Contains skin-nourishing ingredients
  • Goes on clear
Cons
  • Can leave skin feeling greasy

Mineral sunscreens come highly recommended by dermatologists because they act as a physical shield on the skin, but the downside is that, because of this, they tend to leave white residue behind. Not this one, though. Its clear formula is so advanced that it disappears on darker skin tones and tattoos. It's also infused with jojoba and avocado to help hydrate and nourish skin—another thing people with tattoos should be mindful of.

It's also water-resistant and has unique packaging that clues you in when it's time to slather up—when the bottle changes colors, it means harmful UV rays are present.

Is tattoo sunscreen different than regular sunscreen?

This pin on pinterest

Some sunscreen may be specifically marketed as "tattoo sunscreen," but the truth is: These products are no different than your average sunscreen. If they meet the standards outlined by medical professionals—water-resistant broad spectrum formulas with an SPF 30 or higher and free from ingredients like alcohol or fragrance—a regular sunscreen is just as effective at protecting tattoos from the sun as a specified tattoo sunscreen is. You may even score a better deal by choosing a regular sunscreen, since tattoo sunscreens tend to be more expensive.
