The 13 Best Sunscreens For Tattoos, According to Dermatologists
Your tattoo will thank you later.
First-timers may be surprised by all of the after care a tattoo requires—both in the immediate and the long-term. And one thing you'll have to be particularly mindful of for years to come? Protecting your ink from the sun's harmful rays. (Of course, you should always take special care to shield your skin with a quality sunscreen!)
Meet Our Experts: Aanand Geria, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Geria Dermatology in Rutherford, NJ, Mona Gohara, MD, board-certified dermatologist and associate clinical professor at Yale Department of Dermatology, Debra Jaliman, MD, board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City
"For new tattoos, wearing sunscreen is crucial during the healing process," says Aanand Geria, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New Jersey. "Sunburn can cause fading, peeling, and blistering of tattoos, significantly affecting their appearance." What's more, exposure to UV rays can cause tattoos to fade prematurely, especially in areas that receive direct sunlight, he explains.
The best sunscreens for tattoos provide broad-spectrum protection against UVB and UVA rays and have an SPF 30 or higher, says Dr. Geria. "Choose a water-resistant sunscreen that can withstand sweat and does not contain ingredients that can potentially harm the tattoo, such as alcohol or fragrance," he adds.
